L4N develops two main areas of activity.
It focuses, on the one hand, on the sustainable protection of nature. Whether it is engaging in advocacy to improve legislation, policies or even the practices of institutions, with a view to participating in a society more respectful of nature. Or whether it involves introducing all necessary remedies to prevent or put an end to any unacceptable attack on the environment and associated human rights.
It focuses, on the other hand, on the defense and promotion of sustainable development projects which ensure, for present and future generations, economically efficient, socially equitable and ecologically sustainable development. Whether these are projects linked to territorial governance, environmental, land use, urban planning, nature conservation, energy, social or even cultural projects, without exhaustiveness.
L4N advises individuals, NGOs, businesses, and even public authorities.
The financial intervention of philanthropists particularly committed to the protection of nature allows the L4N collective to develop advocacy – before the European Union authorities in particular – in favor of environmental protection. L4N identifies with you the central theme of its advocacy, helped by its Inspiration Committee, sets long, medium and short term objectives, identifies appropriate targets, formulates key messages and develops an action plan while collaborating with organizations that share your vision.
The advocacy activities of L4N are developing in particular with the objective of adopting agroecological agricultural policies, respectful of biodiversity and farmers.
L4N introduces any appeal that proves useful and necessary to counter any provision, European or national, or any project which, in one way or another, contravenes sustainable protection of nature.
These may be appeals brought before the Court of Justice of the European Union, as well as appeals brought before the Belgian courts (Council of State, Constitutional Court, Courts and Tribunals of the judiciary), or before the relevant administrative authorities (appeal for reform). One or more remedies may also be recommended as part of the definition of a strategy involving both advocacy and litigation.
We participate, in an inclusive approach, in the strategic management of your sustainable development projects.
Thinking off the beaten track, increasing the creativity of your transition projects, imagining your constraints as assets for the environment, your company, your employees or even your values chain, etc. are all objectives that guide action from L4N lawyers.
Whether you are an individual, an NGO, a company or a public authority, we anticipate the opportunities and risks inherent in your projects and contribute to the implementation of innovative actions, aimed at reducing their environmental impact, while inspiring stakeholders.
In this regard, we offer strategic reflection sessions, intended to discover or strengthen sustainable development options that are innovative and efficient, followed by strategic planning sessions, intended to operationalize the planned transition.
Creativity and pragmatism are at the heart of our action.
We establish a 360° preliminary and critical diagnosis of your sustainable development projects.
With more than 60 years of cumulative experience in the legal screening of major Belgian and European projects, we work alongside you to determine the public authorities and preferred partners to meet, we list the required administrative authorizations, the legal and regulatory constraints, the possible subsidies to obtain, possible appeals or even possible improvements to make to your project with a view to a successful transition.
We also examine whether your project adequately meets the obligations linked to the social, environmental and legal responsibility of your company: from the duty of transparency and reporting to the duty of vigilance or the various environmental, town planning and tax obligations which impose themselves on you.
Legal security is the key word of our intervention.
We support your sustainable development projects, from their design to their implementation. In a global approach concerned with both the principle of legal certainty and the speed of obtaining authorizations.
We also support project leaders and their teams in the daily management of their difficulties, with kindness and dedication.
L4N lawyers support you in the presentation of your project, in partnership with its designers, as well as in its negotiation with the authorities and the public, or even in the context of administrative or legal appeals.
Throughout its intervention, and when it proves useful or necessary, L4N enlists the skills of recognized experts, whether on a legal or technical level.
Dialogue, kindness and dedication are at the center of our intervention.
L4N offers you a personalized continuous training service, which helps your teams to anticipate and best manage the opportunities and risks linked to your sustainable development projects.
We provide training related to corporate social responsibility, with the new legal requirements in terms of sustainability reporting and the duty of vigilance of companies, or even – and without limitation – in terms of opportunities to invest in safeguarding the biodiversity.
A collective of field practitioners, health experts, and public utility foundations, brought together by the Terre de Vie Foundation, supports the development and promotion of care activities related to agriculture and forestry in Belgium. The aim is to restore the ability of individuals with mild to moderate mental health issues to act on their own lives and on society.
The agricultural and forestry space covers more than 100 hectares, with both agricultural and non-agricultural buildings. The project aims to demonstrate the capacity of such a complex to successfully transition towards a sustainable ecosystem that is conducive to the protection of living beings, economically viable, and offers prospects for social development for the local inhabitants, the region, and those who will stop by for a few hours or days. The area is characterized by the presence of a former orphanage dating from the early 19th century and by its location near the National Park of Forests in the Grand Est region of France.
